BLOG POST #28 – The DOGtor Will See You Now

December 10, 2025

I honestly don’t know how it happened, but the holidays snuck up on me again! Oh, what fun it is to navigate the whirlwind of twinkling lights, festive music, and yes, the usual mountain of tasks. With a spreadsheet for gift ideas, the back-to-back social events, and the all-consuming challenge of turning our homes into winter wonderlands, it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos and forget to breathe. This year, my personal challenge involves some particularly stubborn outdoor candy cane lights that refuse to light up—a minor detail in the big picture, but one that perfectly illustrates the season’s relentless demands.

But right in the middle of it all, there’s a powerful and uncomplicated comfort: the warmth of a loving animal companion.

I can simply look at a cat or dog, and my heart melts. It’s a purely psychological break—a tiny dose of downtime, perfectly packaged in fluffiness. They live entirely in the present moment, and when you’re interacting with them, they gently pull you into their stress-free world.

I recently visited a new doctor and was thrilled to learn that his office has a furry canine mascot! Her name is Waffle (I’m in love already!), she has the cutest mohawk hairdo (seriously smitten now!), and she has a penchant for apple slices (a true foodie!). Waffle is a natural therapy dog for the practice, with her perpetually wagging tail and uncanny ability to know exactly who needs a little extra attention. I walked into the office with my mind going a hundred miles a minute. By the time I left, after a good 10 minutes of petting Waffle and gazing into her soulful eyes, I felt lighter, calmer, and yes, even a little bit happier.

These remarkable helpers, whether a certified comfort animal or just your own beloved pet, remind us of the power of unwavering acceptance. They don’t care if you burnt the first batch of pumpkin spice muffins or if your gift wrapping looks like a five-year-old did it. They just want to be with you, offering a warm presence that says, You are not alone.
So, this holiday season, as you navigate the hustle and bustle, the expectations, and maybe even a few family debates about whether to serve a Tofurky as the main entree (I’m a big fan!), remember the profound impact a furry friend can have. Embrace the healing power of a good cuddle or a simple smile.

As for me, the candy cane lights are still refusing to light up properly. But I’m feeling less stressed about it. Maybe tomorrow, I’ll try putting in new batteries. Or better yet, maybe I’ll just skip the perfect staging altogether and focus on what truly matters: a quiet moment to myself, a good book, a long-overdue catch-up with a dear friend, and some pumpkin spice muffins to top it all off. Waffle would definitely approve.

Happy holidays, everyone. May your days be merry, bright, and filled with plenty of tail wags!
